Provenance: 5530 South Shore Drive, Hyde Park, Chicago

Rare cabinet designed by Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for The Promontory Apartments—his first high-rise project in the United States. Completed in 1949–50, The Promontory marked the beginning of Mies’s American modernist legacy and introduced signature concepts such as an exposed structural frame. This cabinet originates from one of the building’s units overlooking Burnham Park.

Documented in Architectural Forum, Insitu January 1950, p. 74, the piece reflects Mies’s early approach to functional, minimalist furniture integrated into residential modernist architecture.
