Pair of Ceramic Stools/ end Tables Stan Bitters, c. 1975
Stan Bitters Ceramic Mushroom Stools / Side Tables, Pair 1970's
Handbuilt ceramic
Glazed tops, unglazed stoneware bases
A rare and visually compelling pair of ceramic mushroom stools by noted California artist Stan Bitters (born 1936), a leading figure of the postwar organic modern and craft movement. Likely produced for the Hans Sumpf Company, these works exemplify Bitters’ signature approach: rugged, hand-pinched stoneware bases contrasted with richly glazed, expressive surfaces.
Each stool is entirely handmade and intentionally irregular, resulting in subtle variations in scale and proportion. The glazed tops feature a vivid green and yellow leaf or bamboo-inspired motif, providing a striking counterpoint to the raw, textural bases. The pair works equally well as side tables, stools, or sculptural accents.
