Soldner attended the Los Angeles County Art Institute and became Peter Voulkos's first student in 1954, earning an M.F.A. in 1956.
Soldner is known for mastering "American Raku" and a technique called "low-temperature salt firing".
Soldner is also the author of numerous articles and a book titled "Kilns and Their Construction". He is the founder of the Anderson Ranch Arts Center in Snowmass Village, Colorado. The center was established in 1968, and Soldner served as the director in the early 1970s. It is highly regarded for its outstanding summer program, attracting students worldwide to study with renowned teachers.
