Born in Kansas and raised in Mount Vernon, New York, before settling in Santa Barbara, California, the artist Max Neufeldt imbued his work with a humble small-town charm. He studied at Ohio Wesleyan University and earned his Masters Degree in Fine Art at Pratt Institute, where he honed his poetic approach to materials.
His assemblage of various found, handcrafted and industrial materials can be traced to his Mennonite upbringing, which taught him to make use of that which may otherwise go to waste. He placed these objects alongside each other with purpose, juxtaposing the quaint with the quotidian.
Over the course of his career, Neufeldt worked in several distinct formats. There were the welded sculptures, the panel collages, tin quilting, and, of course, the hearts, which he adorned with a hidden pocket for collectors to store their secrets.
Neufeldt exhibited across the United States, in shows such as The Watts '66 Renaissance of Arts and the California Exposition at Sacramento, in galleries including the Vincent Price Gallery in Chicago, Greenson Art Gallery in L.A., as well as a show in Mexico City. His work was collected by figures such as Vincent Price, Roger Corman, Celeste Holms, Adele Falkner Quinn, and his contemporary Momo Nagano.
