Alma Allen, American sculptor and designer known for highly tactile works that balance the natural character of wood and stone with reductive, almost elemental forms. His furniture occupies a space between functional design and sculpture, often allowing knots, fissures, grain patterns, and other irregularities in the material to remain visible as part of the composition.

This 2015 coffee table is carved from a substantial block of walnut, its low, compact volume shaped through a series of angular planes. The faceted exterior gives the piece an architectural presence while the richly figured walnut and visible grain separations retain the organic quality of the original material. Butterflies joints have been introduced at  natural splits, serving both as structural reinforcement and as a deliberate visual detail. The result is characteristic of Allen’s work: a functional object whose form is closely determined by the inherent qualities of the material.
