Set of Six Finn Juhl Egyptian Chairs for Niels Vodder, Denmark, 1949
Exceptional set of six Egyptian Chairs, designed by Finn Juhl in 1949 and produced by master cabinetmaker Niels Vodder, Denmark.
Executed in oiled teak with newly upholstered seats in Spinneybeck leather. The chairs are unmarked, as is typical for many early examples, and the model is extensively documented in the literature on Finn Juhl.
The Egyptian Chair was first exhibited at the 1949 Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition in Copenhagen, where it was shown alongside Juhl’s celebrated Chieftain Chair. The two designs share several characteristic details, most notably the sculptural, horn-like extensions of the wooden frame.
Inspired in part by ancient Egyptian furniture, Juhl transformed historical references through his distinctly modern approach to form and construction. The resulting chair combines finely articulated joinery, an expressive sculptural frame, and a sense of lightness often associated with Juhl’s most accomplished work.
